For pdfFiller’s FAQs

Below is a list of the most common customer questions. If you can’t find an answer to your question, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
How do you sign off a letter of recommendation? Start your closing state with “In conclusion," or "In summary," before going to give your full backing for the person you are recommending. Finally, sign off with “Yours sincerely."
If you are writing a personal recommendation letter, include a salutation (Dear Dr. Williams, Dear Ms. Miller, etc.). If you are writing a general letter, say “To Whom it May Concern" or simply don't include a salutation.
Think carefully before saying yes. Follow a business letter format. Focus on the job description. Explain how you know the person, and for how long. Focus on one or two traits. Remain positive. Share your contact information. Follow the submission guidelines.
General impressions of the person referred in the letter; character and responsibilities. Nature of the relationship between the person writing the letter and the one referred to it. Details of whether the client is fit for the job. The author's willingness to work with the client again.
In general, recommendation letters should be submitted on letterhead if possible. That's because recommenders are presumably writing (and giving their opinions about you) in their professional capacities, either as your professors or as your supervisors.
Address the letter Ask your student who to address the letter of recommendation to. If they're applying to a specific position or school, then address the letter to the hiring manager or admissions director. If the student is applying to several programs, then address the letter To Whom It May Concern.
Times New Roman font always looks very professional, and the font size should be 11 or 12 point. You should address the recommendation letter directly to the person responsible for the application or to the Human Resources department if you don't have a name (in the case of a company).
Dear [Mr./Mrs./Ms./To Whom it May Concern], I am writing to recommend [full name of person you're recommending] for [what you're recommending them for]. I have known [person you're recommending] since [date] as [capacity in which you've known the person, i.e. good friend, co-worker, etc.].
Coworker. Co-volunteer or volunteer leader. Coach. Client or customer. Vendor or business acquaintance. Professor or academic advisor. Personal or professional mentor. Fellow student or graduate from an educational program.
Keep the information factual. Avoid opinions about issues such as personal conflicts. Qualify what you say. Make your praise specific. Refer to specific tasks or projects. Avoid examples that highlight a candidate's weaknesses.
Potential (such as leadership potential) Skills/Abilities/Strengths. Dependability. Consistence. Persistence. Motivation. Character. Contributions (to class or community)
Don't ask someone to lie; you should aim for a truthful reference. Don't ever forge signatures. Your recommendation letter must be genuine. Don't be surprised if the person you are asking for a recommendation letter asks you to write a letter that they will later modify and sign.
If you are writing a general reference letter, you could use Whom it May Concern or Dear Sir/Madam. If you know the person's name, it's better to use the business letter format: include the recipient's name and address, and address them as Dear [Name].
Also known as a personal reference, a character reference is written by someone who knows you well. This might be a family friend, a neighbor, or someone you once volunteered with. It can be someone for whom you did casual work, such as babysitting or gardening, or a teacher or someone who coached you.
Give details for how you know the applicant. The closer you've worked with her, the stronger your reference letter. Paint the picture of why you recommend the candidate. Measurable achievements make a letter of reference sparkle. Offer to talk more with the addressee.
