Below is a list of the most common customer questions. If you can’t find an answer to your question, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
You must be a seasoned inspector to land a job as a DOT inspector. Once you have the job, you will need to complete six motor carrier compliance reviews, 32 Level I and V inspections, and to complete a refresher course each year.
The vehicle-only inspection includes brakes, fuel, cargo, exhaust, steering, lighting, suspensions, tires, steering wheel, trailer, windshield wipers, emergency exits, engine, and battery. A vehicle-only inspection can take up to about 30 minutes to complete.
In terms of the regulations, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations require qualifications for anyone performing: Annual (periodic) vehicle inspections see 49 CFR 396.19; or Brake inspections, maintenance, service, or repairs see 49 CFR 396.25. In either case, formal training is not necessarily required.
There is no requirement to be licensed to do truck inspections, but you must be certified. Requirements can be found in 49 CFR Part 396.19. Basically, you must complete a training program, have experience as a mechanic, or a federal or state inspector or similar experience.
Every commercial vehicle, including each segment of a combination vehicle requires periodic inspection that must be performed at least once every 12 months.
The annual DOT Inspection is required of all CMV's that have a OVER of 10,001 lbs or more, as defined in the definition of a CMV in CFR 390.5. CFR 396.17 requires that all CMV's that meet the above definition be inspected annually, according to Appendix G of the FMCSA regulations.
AUGUST 9, 2016, Annual or Periodic DOT Vehicle Inspections (the inspections in which you receive a sticker on the CMV indicating that it has passed inspection) must be conducted by a Qualified Inspector at a minimum of once every 12 months.
A level 1 inspection, or the North American Standard Inspection, is the most thorough DOT inspection. It's a detailed inspection of both the truck and the truck driver. The inspector will examine your seat belt, tail lamps, steering wheel, exhaust system, and everything required for driving safely.
Roadside Inspections are examinations of commercial motor vehicles and/or drivers by Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program (MC SAP) Inspectors. If an inspection results in serious violations, the driver will be issued a driver or vehicle Out-of-Service Order.
The level three DOT inspection is a driver-only inspection focused on the driver's credentials. With this inspection, drivers are checked for: Driver's License, Endorsements, Medical Card, Skill Performance Evaluation certificate, RODS, HAZMAT requirements, Vehicle Inspection Report, and HOS documentation.
Level 2: Walk-Around Driver and Vehicle Inspection The only difference between level two and level one is that the official who is checking your vehicle will only inspect items that can be checked without physically getting under the vehicle. The level two inspection only takes about 30 minutes to complete.
