(a) General requirements. Each inventory shall contain a complete and accurate record of all controlled substances on hand on the date the inventory is taken, and shall be maintained in written, typewritten, or printed form at the registered location.
After an initial inventory is taken, the registrant shall take a new inventory of all controlled substances on hand at least every two years.
The records which must be maintained by a pharmacy are: Executed and unexecuted official order forms (DEA Form 222) or the electronic equivalent. Power of Attorney authorization to sign order forms. Receipts and/or invoices for schedules III, IV, and V controlled substances.
DEA requires that NTPs conduct an initial inventory of all stocks of controlled substance medications on hand on the date that the NTP begins operations. It is also required that, at least once every two years, each NTP conduct and document a physical inventory (called a “biennial inventory") of the medication on hand.
By law, your pharmacy must always maintain complete and accurate inventory records accounting for all controlled substances in your custody. Inventory records must be maintained for a minimum of 2 years, be readily available for inspection by the DEA, and must include the following: Initial inventory.
This allows for tracking of each controlled substance from initial manufacture to final dispensing to the patient or disposal. A pharmacy must maintain these records for at least 2 years. Records involving Schedule II medications must be maintained separately from all other records.
After the initial inventory is taken, the registrant shall take a new inventory of all stocks of controlled substances on hand at least every two years. The biennial inventory may be taken on any date which is within two years of the previous biennial inventory date. (d) Inventory date for newly controlled substances.
