What information must be included in inventory records for controlled substances?
(a) General requirements. Each inventory shall contain a complete and accurate record of all controlled substances on hand on the date the inventory is taken, and shall be maintained in written, typewritten, or printed form at the registered location.
How often does the DEA require an inventory of all controlled substances?
After an initial inventory is taken, the registrant shall take a new inventory of all controlled substances on hand at least every two years.
What are two records that must be kept when maintaining a DEA registration and using controlled substances?
The records which must be maintained by a pharmacy are: Executed and unexecuted official order forms (DEA Form 222) or the electronic equivalent. Power of Attorney authorization to sign order forms. Receipts and/or invoices for schedules III, IV, and V controlled substances.
What are the requirements for inventory records of controlled substances?
DEA requires that NTPs conduct an initial inventory of all stocks of controlled substance medications on hand on the date that the NTP begins operations. It is also required that, at least once every two years, each NTP conduct and document a physical inventory (called a “biennial inventory") of the medication on hand.

What is a biennial inventory?
Biennial Controlled Substance Inventory Form. The DEA requires a physical inventory of all controlled substances to be conducted every two years for each registered location. The inventory may be taken on any date within two years of the previous inventory date.
