Below is a list of the most common customer questions. If you can’t find an answer to your question, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
Alberta's Employment Standards Code requires employers to pay employees at least once per month. Wages, overtime pay and general holiday pay must be paid within 10 consecutive days after the end of each pay period.
Payroll checks may be issued at the end of each pay period worked, or there may be a lag and your paycheck may be issued a week or two (or longer) after you begin work. At the latest, you should be paid by the company's regular pay date for the first pay period that you worked.
Your First Paycheck. Normally you will receive your first pay check three weeks after you enter on duty. You will be paid bi-weekly (every two weeks) according to the calendar of holidays and pay periods.
Many states have laws for when overtime wages are applicable as well. Employees who do not receive payment by the minimum payday required by state law can file a wage claim with their state labor department. The department can order the employer to pay the employee back wages and damages, if applicable.
You do not have to pay a worker the minimum wage for each individual hour worked — but in general you must pay them the minimum wage on average for all the qualifying time worked in a pay reference period. A pay reference period is usually the period of time for which a worker's wage is actually paid.
Semi-monthly Pay Periods: Employees receive 24 paychecks per year, 2 per month. Employers typically issue checks on the 1st and 15th of the month, or the 15th and the last day of the month. You do have the option of scheduling recurring payments on any two dates in a month that are spread equally apart.
The Difference Between Semimonthly and Biweekly Semimonthly means your employees get paid on two specific days of the month, regardless of when they fall. For instance, you might choose to pay your employees on the 15th and 30th of every month. Semimonthly means employees receive 24 paychecks per year, instead of 26.
A pay period is the period in which your employees earn wages. For example: the start of the pay period can be on Sunday and end on Saturday. A pay date is the date that the employees are paid. This is the date that is used to determine when payroll liabilities are due (check the company's deposit schedule).
