The National Aeronautics and Space Administration said today that it had recovered remains of each of the seven Challenger astronauts and had finished its operations to retrieve the wreckage of the space shuttle's crew compartment from the ocean floor.
In March 1986, the remains of the astronauts were found in the debris of the crew cabin. Though all the important pieces of the shuttle were retrieved by the time NASA closed its Challenger investigation in 1986, most of the spacecraft remained in the Atlantic Ocean.
Remains of Columbia astronauts recovered. Remains of some of the seven astronauts who died when the space shuttle Columbia disintegrated on Saturday have been recovered, NASA said on Sunday evening. The body parts were located in north-eastern Texas, where much of the debris from Columbia has fallen.
Myth #3: The crew died instantly The flight, and the astronauts' lives, did not end at that point, 73 seconds after launch. After Challenger was torn apart, the pieces continued upward from their own momentum, reaching a peak altitude of 65,000 feet before arching back down into the water.
On Jan. 28, 1986, NASA's space shuttle Challenger exploded after liftoff, killing seven astronauts and shocking the world.
On May 20, 1986, the comingled cremated remains of the seven Challenger astronauts were buried at Arlington National Cemetery, in Section 46, Grave 1129.
Myth #3: The crew died instantly The flight, and the astronauts' lives, did not end at that point, 73 seconds after launch. After Challenger was torn apart, the pieces continued upward from their own momentum, reaching a peak altitude of 65,000 feet before arching back down into the water.
The spacecraft disintegrated over the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Cape Canaveral, Florida, at 11:39 a.m. EST (16:39 UTC). The disintegration of the vehicle began after a joint in its right solid rocket booster (SRB) failed at liftoff.
In the words of the final report by fellow astronauts, the crew possibly but not certainly lost consciousness, even though a few of the emergency air bottles (designed for escape from a smoking vehicle on the ground) had been activated.
On February 1, 2003, the Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated during atmospheric entry, killing all seven crew members. The disaster was the second fatal accident in the Space Shuttle program, after Challenger, which broke apart 73 seconds after liftoff and killed the seven-member crew in 1986.
