alternative (or alternative path) The name of a specific file in the filesystem, which may be made accessible via a generic name using the alternatives system. alternatives directory A directory, by default /usr/local/etc/alternatives, containing the symlinks.
The update-alternatives class is used to register a command provided by a package that may have an alternative implementation in a some other package. In the following sections we'll use the /bin/ping command as an example.
update-alternatives creates, removes, maintains and displays information about the symbolic links comprising the Debian alternatives system. It is possible for several programs fulfilling the same or similar functions to be installed on a single system at the same time.
With update-alternatives we can run different programs under a generic name. We call these programs alternatives. A well-known example is editor, which can refer to vim, nano, or joe. The command uses symbolic links to keep track of alternatives.
The update-alternatives command is a useful tool for managing multiple versions of a program on a Linux system. It allows the user to specify which version of a program should be used by default, and provides an easy way to switch between alternatives if needed.
