What is an over-the-counter permit? Over-the-counter permits are permits that can be issued without the need for plan review. Some types of over-the-counter permits are: reproofs, water heater, furnace and A/C repair/replacements, electric service panel upgrades, and other miscellaneous repairs.
As defined in the Building Code, a Site Permit is a permit issued upon the approval of a building permit application based on conceptual preliminary drawings and documentation. The Site Permit plans shall describe the exterior of the building in sufficient detail to mark heights, lengths, and widths.
You may think that any house plan or blueprint that is published or created by an architect, or any published building plan for a shed or garage, is automatically sufficient to obtain a permit. But your local building permit office may not approve these plans.
Work must start within 90 days of permit issuance, with start defined as calling a first inspection. Permits expire from 4 months to 4 years after they are issued depending upon the cost of the project. Extensions can be requested and require a modest fee. How long does it take to obtain a permit?
For active issued building permits, submit a Service Request Application to the Department of Building Inspection, Inspection Services — Building Inspection Division at 1660 Mission Street, San Francisco, CA 94103 or you may call (415) 558-6570. Extension fees apply.
A building permit is an official approval issued by the local government agency that allows you or your contractor to proceed with a construction or remodeling project on your property. It is intended to ensure that the project plans to comply with local standards for land use, zoning, and construction.
Best way to get around the codes is to build as far back as possible out of sight, and only have walk-in access, you park at the gate. The inspectors have to have probable cause (see something) or (have a complaint filed) to access your land. Get a copy of the laws and research your rights.
Building permits are typically required for any construction improvement, repair, alteration, construction, or demolition project, including pool or spa installations, sandblasting, most excavation and the erection of temporary structures such as temporary power poles.
