Salary Packaging enables employees to buy a range of items out of pre-tax salary rather than after-tax salary. It is not the same as Salary Sacrificing which is available to any employee.
In contrast to Salary Packaging, Salary Sacrificing is an arrangement between an employer and an employee, where the employee agrees to forgo part of their future entitlement to salary or wages in return for the employer providing them with benefits of a similar value. (Source: ATO Website).
Salary sacrificing, or salary packaging, is where you pay for items and services or contribute to your retirement savings using your pre-tax income. Salary sacrificing is done through an arrangement between you and your employer meaning the items and services you can receive will depend on your employer.
Fringe benefits are very tempting, but in some workplaces sacrificing salary is not such a tax-effective way to pay for them. Salary packaging or salary sacrifice is a popular way to access the fringe benefits some employers allow, such as superannuation, motor vehicles, health insurance and school fees.
The sacrificed component of your total salary package is not counted as assessable income for tax purposes. This means that it is not subject to pay as you go (PAY) withholding tax. If salary sacrificed super contributions are made to a complying super fund, the sacrificed amount is not considered a fringe benefit.
With salary sacrifice you receive the tax benefit immediately as part of your take-home pay, while with a personal contribution you have to wait until you lodge your annual tax return. Personal contributions can be made as a lump sum at any time during the financial year, giving you flexibility if your income changes.
Salary sacrifice may affect super and some government benefits. You pay a lesser amount of income tax on the reduced amount of salary or wages you receive. Your employer is liable to pay fringe benefits tax (FBI) on the non-cash benefits provided.
