For pdfFiller’s FAQs

Below is a list of the most common customer questions. If you can’t find an answer to your question, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
The letter ó is a relic from hundreds of years ago when there was a length distinction in Polish similar to that in Czech, with á and é also being common at the time. Subsequently, the length distinction disappeared and á and é were abolished, but ó came to be pronounced the same as u.
Letters. There are 32 letters in the Polish alphabet: 9 vowels and 23 consonants. ⟨q⟩, ⟨v⟩, and ⟨x⟩ are not used in any native Polish words and are mostly found in foreign words (such as place names) and commercial names.
Polish does not contain the letter 'V', it instead uses 'W' (with the sound of English 'v'). This can often be a way to distinguish between Polish and other Slav family names, although this is not always the case due to incorrect transliterations from Polish: e.g. NOWAK is Polish, but NOVÁK would be Czech or Slovak.
This is the same change which happened much earlier in Latin to separate "v" from "u" in the first place. So when written Polish was finally standardized, many writers were using "w" for the /v/ sound due to influence from German. And it thus became part of the official orthography.
Over the years and with the help of a few diacritic signs (like the ogonek , the kropka , and the kreska) Polish has developed all the necessary letters for its specific needs: Ą, Ć, Ę, Ł, Ń, Ó, Ś, Ź, Ż. (Also, it dropped 'useless' Latin letters such as Q, V, X, preserved in the English alphabet.)
Consonant Sounds Every 'r' in Polish is rolled, 'c' is pronounced like a 'ts' (cuts), 'w' is like an English 'v' sound (wodka is the 'v' from 'vodka'), and 'j' is pronounced like an English 'y' (jeden).
