Put a strong passcode. This is the first step to keeping your phone secure. Lock your apps. Use two-factor authentication. Install security apps. Only use trusted apps. Update phone and apps regularly.
Remove your SIM card. This may seem obvious but worth stating nevertheless. Remove security locks. If there is a PIN, pattern lock or fingerprint authentication involved, then you'd want to disable it. Backup & Reset.

Stop unauthorized apps from installing. Set a strong password (rather than a fingerprint). Enable auto-lock for your device. Disable built-in Google services. Encrypt your device (although this may slow down older Android devices). Disable cloud backup storage. Say no to advertisement tracking.
It's not just smartphone theft that puts your personal information stored on your phone at risk. If your phone breaks, and you take it into a cell repair shop to have it fixed you may also be at risk. Luckily, you can plan ahead and make it nearly impossible to access your phone's data or get away with the crime.
Passwords to devices are absolutely necessary for technicians to do their job properly and to fully diagnose most problems. Also in my shop all devices are to be fully tested before the repair, during the repair (while test fitting parts) and after the repair.
If you're using iCloud, back up your phone by going to Settings > iCloud > Storage and Backup and click the Back-Up Now button to do a backup. If you're using iTunes to back up your phone, connect to iTunes and do a backup.
Be sure to take a full back up of your Android and/or iOS device before you go any further. However, also ensure you keep a note of your phone's IMEI and Serial number details with you. This ensures peace of mind if you suspect foul play while submitting your phone for repair.
