Updated 5/31/2019 The current 2019 version of the Form W-4 is similar to last year's 2018 version. The IRS is working closely with the payroll and the tax community as it makes additional changes to the Form W-4 for use in 2020.
You can claim anywhere between 0 and 3 allowances on the 2019 W4 IRS form, depending on what you're eligible for. Generally, the more allowances you claim, the less tax will be withheld from each paycheck. The fewer allowances claimed, the larger withholding amount, which may result in a refund.
While claiming one allowance on your W-4 means your employer will take less money out of your paycheck for federal taxes, it does not impact how many taxes you'll actually owe. Depending on your income and any deductions or credits that apply to you, you may receive a tax refund or have to pay a difference.
Claiming two just means that less is withheld from each paycheck and your refund will be less at the end of the year (or you may owe the IRS). The general rule is that the more allowances you claim, the less withholding you'll have taken out of your paycheck.
