Below is a list of the most common customer questions. If you can’t find an answer to your question, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
It is common for one veterinarian's office to simply mail or fax your pet's records to his new vet. However, as the pet parent, you are free to request a copy to pass along to the new vet in person. In some states, this is allowable, while others prohibit the doctor from giving you a copy of your pet's file.
Contact previous daycare centers, schools, camps, or anyone else that you may have given a copy of his shot record to, and see if they still have a copy. If your previous doctor moved or retired, contact your local medical society or state medical board to see where old records may be stored.
Absolutely. You will receive a copy of all services performed at our vaccine clinic. If you've lost your copy, we keep records for at least 3 years. Call us 7-days a week at 877-838-7468.

The California Business and Professions code prohibits veterinarians from sharing any record information with a third party without client consent, except in specified legal situations.
A vet could choose more expensive drugs than necessary if they are aware the animal is insured. Unlike human medical records, veterinary records do not follow the animal if the owner moves to a new practice.

Unlike people, pets are not protected by HIPAA, the law that guides medical privacy, because they are considered property and not persons (although there are many pet owners who would argue otherwise!) Like people, however, health information for pets and livestock collected at the vet also is protected by law.
Medical privacy is a big deal. To start with, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPO) that governs privacy when it comes to human medical care does not apply to veterinary patients. In fact, there is no regulation of veterinary records at the federal level at all.
A medical record includes, but is not limited to, the following documents: client information forms, emergency contact information forms, client communications, cumulative patient profile/master problem list, progress notes, monitoring forms, protocols, logs, laboratory reports, diagnostic images (such as radiographs
Information within veterinary medical records is considered privileged and confidential. It must not be released except by court order or consent of the owner of the patient. Veterinarians are obligated to provide copies or summaries of medical records when requested by the client.
You can find a new vet then do one of 2 things, either ask the new vet to contact the old one and ask them to forward your records or call in the old vets and tell them you are changing and ask them to forward you records. Either way you pay the account, and it is your choice where you spend it.
Have a conversation with the veterinarian's office that you'll be leaving. Choose a new vet and give them a call. Transfer your pet's medical documents. Ask for your pet's vaccination schedule.
All very reassuring in an emergency situation. There are no rules on it though, and you can register with as many vets as you like, as long as the notes can be moved between them (vets are not technically permitted to treat a pet not 'under their care' — including having the notes etc - except in emergencies of course.
Follow up visits after surgery are always free, they are included in the price of the surgery.
