Almost any type of wood works fine for square or rectangular columns. For economy or paint-grade, use fir or yellow pine. For high-end columns, use hardwoods such as birch, mahogany or white or red oak. As with any type of exterior wood, proper sealing and maintenance is required.
Wash the porch posts and railings with a mild soap and water solution. Use a wire brush or coarse sandpaper to remove loose flakes of paint and smooth the surface of the posts and railings. Apply a coat of primer to the surface. Apply the surface color, using the same technique as for the primer.
Vines wrapped around columns give your front porch a cool and inviting look for summer. Use potted vines that can be trimmed and brought inside during the winter months. Baskets of live flowers dangling from decorative hangers can also give your front porch columns a bright summer look.
Winter is the time to really have fun decorating your front porch columns, Wrap them with fresh pine garland and white twinkling lights for an elegant look. Or, hang bright vertical banners declaring “Merry Christmas.” A pair of matching wreaths, one placed on each column, also adds a festive look.
Step 1: Attach Boards Around Existing Columns. Measure height of your porch columns and cut 4- 1×6s to that size. Step 2: Attach Top 1×6 Trim. Cut 4 pieces of 1×6 @ ~7 1/2 on the short side and ~9 inches on the long side with mitered angles on both ends. Step 3: Build Base Unit. From the 1×10 boards, cut 8 – 36 pieces.
Wrapped Columns If you have columns on your porch, don't forget to wrap them in garland and lights to make them a bit more festive. Add a few smaller ornaments if you want to make the columns match your decorating theme, or you can just add plain garland to keep the look simple and elegant.
