Go to File > Options > Proofing. Select AutoCorrect Options, and then select the Autocrat As You Type tab. Select or clear Automatic bulleted lists or Automatic numbered lists. Select OK.
Position the insertion point where you want the sequential number to appear. For instance, this would be in the caption for the table or figure. Press Ctrl+F9 to insert field brackets. Type “seq followed by the name of the element. Press F9 to update the field information.
All you have to do is click inside the paragraph where you want to turn numbering on or off and click the Numbering button. With the insertion point in the paragraph that you do not want numbered, click the Numbering button on the Formatting toolbar. Press ENTER twice at the end of a numbered list.
