The SQL UNION ALL operator is used to combine the result sets of 2 or more SELECT statements. It does not remove duplicate rows between the various SELECT statements (all rows are returned). Each SELECT statement within the UNION ALL must have the same number of fields in the result sets with similar data types.
More than one operator can be used to bring multiple queries together for a single result set, but be aware that each one will provide a different result. SQL Server lets you combine multiple queries into one statement in order to produce a single result set.

First, the number and the orders of columns that appear in all SELECT statements must be the same. Second, the data types of columns must be the same or convertible.
Union will remove duplicates. Union All does not. That you don't have already the duplicates in the first part of the query (maybe generated by the left join). As I understand it UNION it will not add to the result set rows that are already on it, but it won't remove duplicates already present in the first data set.
Each SELECT statement within UNION must have the same number of columns. The columns must also have similar data types. The columns in each SELECT statement must also be in the same order.
If you use the INSERT , UPDATE , and DELETE statement individually, you have to construct three separate statements to update the data to the target table with the matching rows from the source table. THEN DELETE; First, you specify the target table and the source table in the MERGE clause.
