For pdfFiller’s FAQs

Below is a list of the most common customer questions. If you can’t find an answer to your question, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
The bricks-and-mortar equivalent happens when the cashier swipes your card. If you forget to sign your receipt, your purchase still appears on your credit card bill. In fact, you likely won't notice a difference -- though the merchant might.
If you look at the back of your credit card, you'll see the small print that tells you your credit card isn't valid unless it's signed. But what happens if you don't sign your credit card? Technically, nothing, other than you may be required to do so before a cashier will complete your transaction.
Major credit card companies Mastercard, Visa, American Express and Discover are eliminating the need for shoppers to sign receipts for credit and debit sales beginning April 14. That means most merchants in the U.S. or Canada can decide whether to require signatures on sales using cards or mobile payments.
Signatures are required to prevent fraud. Your signature on a credit card receipt authorizes the payment; it follows that if you don't sign, you can later claim that you didn't authorize the charge. If you win your claim, the bank that issued the credit card is liable for the payment.
An application identifier (AID) is used to address an application in the card. An AID consists of a registered application provider identifier (RID) of five bytes, which is issued by the ISO/IEC 7816-5 registration authority.
The receipt also helps prove you had the card, or information from the card, to enter into the merchant terminal. It is advised to keep signed credit card receipts for at least 18 months for chargeback rebuttal. As for tax purposes, it is recommended that merchants keep signed receipts for at least 3 years.
Why You Should Never Leave the Customer Copy of Your Receipt at a Restaurant. Yikes! The restaurant industry is full of honest, trustworthy individuals. And keeping your copy of the receipt will make it much easier to refute any suspicious charges should they pop up down the road.
If you have not been given a receipt, or have lost a receipt that you need from a past meal purchase, it is possible to obtain a duplicate itemized receipt. This process is simple, only requiring you to call or visit the restaurant to get a copy of the itemized receipt.
In some cases, if it was a recent purchase you may be able to go back to the store where you purchased the items and ask if they can look up your receipt. If you pay by cash, this may not work, but if you paid by debit or credit card they should be able to look you up and print you out a new receipt.
Your signature on a credit card receipt authorizes the payment; it follows that if you don't sign, you can later claim that you didn't authorize the charge. If you win your claim, the bank that issued the credit card is liable for the payment.
One of the reasons you're required to sign the back of your credit card is so that merchants can check the signature on your card to the signature on your receipt. The second is to protect all parties involved (you, the merchant, and the credit card company) in the event that a purchase is disputed.

The signature is technically required by the credit card issuer. If you write anything other than your signature, you are breaking the rules. But the more realistic answer is that it doesn't matter at all. The bottom line: Get a card with fraud protection, and sign it.
The credit card companies do not get every single receipt that people sign. The only time anyone has a problem is if the cardholder complains about a charge. The store is not beholden to accept payment with someone else's card, but they will.
